Professional Photographer Gear: The Essentials
If you’re just starting out as a professional photographer and are ready to upgrade to professional grade equipment, you might be wondering what to purchase. Below is some gear that you’ll need to buy and become acquainted with before you go out on your first paid shoot. I’m a Canon guy and it’s never let me down. There are also a ton of tutorials and online help as you learn to use your new equipment which is great as Below are my first three purchases as a professional photographer. It’s gear that has paid for it self many times over and that I still use today.
The Camera. The Canon 5D Mark iii (or if your down to purchase the latest and greatest Mark iv) is honestly one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. And I was SOO nervous to make it. I am still learning about all the amazing things this camera is capable of and it’s held up great over many years of torture on the beach.
The Lens. The Canon EF 50mm Fixed lens with a low f-stop like the one below is a perfect, versatile lens that will perform even in low light. You can shoot almost anything with this lens. Just know that not having a zoom means you will have to reposition yourself a lot. So be ready to move!
The SD Card. I say go for a big card that writes quickly (see below). It might be a few extra but it will save you money in the long-term and NOTHING is more annoying than waiting for your photo to write to the card.
